Install New Flushmount Ceiling Light

Flush-mount ceiling lights sit tightly against the ceiling, as opposed to dangling down from a chain or rod. They're generally one of the easier fixtures to install. Most kits provide a mounting bracket that connects to the electrical box. The fixture connects to the bracket. If you choose a fixture that's wider at the base than the existing fixture, you will avoid having to touch up the ceiling paint around the fixture.

Instructions

1. Cut electricity to the old fixture at the fuse box. Use your screwdriver to remove the old fixture from the ceiling, extracting the mounting screws. Disconnect the wiring behind and pull the fixture free.

2. Locate the mounting bracket from the package of your new light. It will be a metal disk or ring that attaches to a standard electrical box with machine screws. The wires from the electrical box will hang down through the middle of the bracket.

3. Carry the new light fixture to the top of the ladder. Position it near the electrical box. Use wire caps to connect the like-colored wires from the box and the light, white to white and black to black. The caps twist right over the tops of the two wires. Wrap a piece of electrician's tape around each connection to seal it.

4. Twist the bare copper grounding wire from the electrical box around the green grounding screw in the light casing. Tighten the screw. On some models, there will be a green wire that you connect to the ground wire, instead of a grounding screw.

5. Lift the fixture to the bracket, pushing the wires into the electrical box. Mount the light fixture against the bracket, using the provided screws. Restore the electricity.
