Fix Textured Drywall Ceilings

Fix Textured Drywall Ceilings

Whether there is a crack, a hole or a stain on a textured drywall ceiling, it must be repaired. Doing so will damage the texture and make any repairs more noticeable. Repairs to the ceiling are done after removing old texture and then new texture is applied to blend with the old. All materials needed to repair the ceiling and texture is available at most hardware and home improvement stores.

Instructions

1. Remove texture from the ceiling at the location of the damage. Use a putty knife to gently scrape at the texture until it is flaking off easily. Clear an approximately square foot area.

2. Use a sanding block or wood wrapped with drywall sandpaper to sand the edge transition from texture down to the base drywall. Wipe the area with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris.

3. Repair the drywall by applying drywall mud with a putty knife or by covering the area with drywall tape and covering that with a mud. Sand the area smooth to hide the patch and get it flush with the rest of the ceiling. Allow the mud to dry thoroughly before sanding.

4. Apply more mud to the area thickly with a putty knife and get a smooth even coat. Feather it lightly to join with the existing textured ceiling. Use a texturing brush or bristle brush to recreate the pattern on the ceiling by dragging it gently through the wet mud and allowing some of the substance to lift off with the brush to form peaks and valleys.

5. Scrape the mud off the ceiling with the putty knife and start over if the look and texture is not what you want. Continue until satisfied with the integration with the existing texture. Paint the ceiling to match the rest of the surface color.
