Wire A Ceiling Fan With Remote & 3wire

A ceiling fan can greatly enhance your home's appearance and comfort. When installing one yourself, always be sure to take the proper safety precautions. Always make sure that the power is turned off before working with electrical wiring. If you're not familiar with the color coding used in electrical wiring, it can be a little confusing wiring up a ceiling fan yourself. However, with the proper guidance, you can have that fan installed and working properly in no time.

Instructions

1. Turn off the electricity in the room where you'll be working. You can have a friend or family member turn the circuit breakers on and off one at a time until the light turns off in the room where you are. Make sure your partner knows not to turn the breaker back on once you give him the signal that he's found the right breaker. It would also be wise to label your breakers if they're not labeled already.

2. Remove the existing light fixture from the place where you plan to install your new ceiling fan.

3. Remove any brackets that were used to hang your existing fixture.

4. Make sure that the electrical box in your ceiling is one that is rated ceiling fan safe.

5. Mount the bracket needed to hang your new ceiling fan.

6. Hang the body of your ceiling fan (without the blades) from the mounting bracket.

7. If necessary, strip 1/2 inch of the insulation off the wires coming from your ceiling using your strippers or wire-cutting pliers.

8. If you have three wires coming from your fan, not including the green (ground) wire, you likely have a white, a black, and a blue wire. Connect the white wire from your fan to the white wire in your ceiling. If you have black, white, and red wires coming from your ceiling, you can connect the blue wire from your fan to the red wire coming from your ceiling. In most cases, there will not be a red wire in your ceiling and you will have to connect the black and the blue wires from your fan to the black wire in your ceiling. So there will be three wires going into that wire nut: black and blue from the fan, and black from your ceiling. Black is the hot wire for the fan and blue is the hot wire for the light. The black wire from your ceiling can supply power to both of these wires.

9. Connect the ground (green) wire from your fan to the ground (green or bare copper) wire in your ceiling.

10. Finish assembling and installing your fan according to the manufacturer's instructions.
