Decrease Your Electric Bill

Here's an idea: Reduce energy usage by replacing incandescent lighbulbs.

Summers are known for rising electric bills due to air-conditioner use, and winters see an increase in heater and fireplace use. However, electricity bills can be high no matter what time of year due to energy inefficiencies around the house. Don't be held hostage by wasted energy and the rising cost of electricity. Take action to make your home energy-efficient to decrease your electric bill.

Instructions

1. Replace incandescent lightbulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. CFLs use less energy than conventional lightbulbs and generate less heat, adding to your electric bill savings.

2. Install a whole house fan. The fan draws cool air in from outside and forces hot air from the house out through attic vents. The California Energy Commission Consumer Energy Center reports that whole house fans can help reduce your electric bill up to 5 percent over the summer months.

3. Use ceiling fans. These fans circulate air throughout your house, helping to maintain an even temperature so your cooling and heating system do not need to run as hard for as long.

4. Weatherize your home. Weatherization can increase your home's ability to hold the heat or cold you want and keep out the heat or cold you don't. Install proper weatherstripping on door jambs and around windows to create an energy-efficient seal.

5. Invest in solar panels if your home is located in a sunny area. This is a large investment, but it can pay off in energy savings over time.

6. Apply for any discounts, credits or rebates available for purchasing new EnergyStar rated or energy-efficient appliances. You'll see lower energy usage with efficient appliances, and the discounts will offset your electric bill.

7. Contact your electric company to learn about any cost-saving programs or discounts for households that are considered low-income.

8. Move your garage fridge or freezer. If you have a spare refrigerator, you might be throwing money away due to the heat in the garage and the electricity required to keep the appliance cool. Moving the spare fridge or chest freezer indoors or unplug it during the hottest months to decrease your electric bill.

9. Get your air conditioner serviced. A certified technician can check for proper refrigerant levels, inspect all electrical components and controls, clean the evaporator and condenser coils, oil the motor, calibrate the thermostat, check the condenser and replace filters as needed. All this adds up to higher efficiency, which means a lower electric bill.
