Updating a ceiling light can have a dramatic effect on a room's decor. With the right ceiling fixture, a little preparation and some careful installation, your new room will dazzle under the new light.
Instructions
1. Remove the nut or screws that hold the old
2. Test the ground wire by turning the power back on at the main circuit and use a non-contact tester to the colored wire coming out of the ceiling. Using a neon voltage tester, touch the black lead on the colored wire and the red on the metal side of the box. The tester should light. If not, call an electrician for assistance. Turn off the power at the main circuit again before installing the new light.
3. Ensure that the ground wire is attached to the metal box. If not, use 6 inches of bare copper wire wrapped ? of the way around a 10-32 ground screw. Screw it into the bottom of the box.
4. Assemble the mounting strap provided in your light fixture kit while the fixture is lying on the floor. Take the backside of the canopy that rests against the ceiling and line it up with the new crossbar. Screw it into the pipe until about 3/8-inch of the pipe will be sticking outside of the canopy once fully assembled. Tighten the locknut against the crossbar.
5. Bring the light fixture up to the ceiling so you can begin to install it. It's best if someone can assist by holding the light fixture while you perform the installation. Move all the wires to one side of the crossbar and attach the crossbar to the ceiling with the included screws.
6. Connect the neutral wire from the ceiling to the light's neutral wires. Connect the hot wires from the box to the light and finish by looping the ground wire around the ground screw on the crossbar. Tighten so the end of the wire connects to the ground wire from the light fixture.
7. Fold all wires into the ceiling and slide the canopy over the exposed box, tightening the decorative nut on the end of the pipe to complete the installation. Turn power back on to the room and enjoy your newly installed light fixture.
