A knockdown texture sometimes covers a ceiling to hide imperfections and uneven surfaces. It has a slightly flattened surface and adds a decorative element to your ceiling. Over time, the knockdown ceiling texture can develop cracks. When this happens, not only do you have to patch the crack, but you also must replicate the same knockdown texture to help the repaired area blend with the rest of the ceiling. You can perform this task successfully with the right tools and materials.
Instructions
1. Use a putty knife to scrape off any knockdown texture that's peeling or coming loose from the ceiling around the crack. Cover the floor with a drop cloth to minimize the mess or catch the debris with a piece of cardboard held underneath the crack.
2. Force some paintable caulk into the crack to fill it.
3. Hold a sheet of plastic against the ceiling and press a pushpin through the plastic and into the ceiling. Arrange the plastic so it hangs down about 4 feet from the ceiling around the four sides of the crack, leaving a space of about 1 foot between the plastic and the crack on all sides. This minimizes the mess from the new texture.
4. Spray a coat of latex stain-blocking primer over the caulked crack.
5. Shake a can of aerosol knockdown texture spray and apply it to the ceiling, holding it 9 to 14 feet away from the ceiling. Let the texture dry for the recommended amount of time as printed on the product label. This can take up to 24 hours.
6. Run the flat side of a drywall knife against the new texture gently to flatten the texture after letting it dry for one to two minutes. This gives you the slightly flattened, knockdown texture.
7. Remove the plastic sheet from the ceiling.
8. Paint the repaired area to match the color of the rest of the ceiling, if necessary.
