Install Stereo Speakers In A Home Ceiling

Install Stereo Speakers in a Home Ceiling

Stereo speakers installed in the ceiling of a home offer a high quality sound alternative for a home theatre or sound system. The placement of the speakers in the ceiling also eliminates the need for floor or wall speakers that interfere with the d cor of the room. Installing a ceiling stereo speaker requires skills and tools possessed by most do-it-yourselfers.

Instructions

1. Select the locations for the speakers. The website Wireless Experts suggests placing the ceiling speakers to the left and right of the main listening area between the stereo or television unit for standard stereo sound. Surround sound is accomplished by placing speakers in the ceiling behind and to the left and right of the main listening area.

2. Confirm that the location planned for the speakers is free of existing ceiling joists, wires, pipes or other in-wall components. This may require entering the space above the ceiling, if it is open, and checking the area.

3. Cut the drywall to create the opening for the stereo speaker. Depending on the design of the speaker, this may require cutting a round, square or rectangular hole through the drywall. No matter what the shape is, start by tracing the shape on the ceiling using the supplied template. Drill a hole in the interior of the drywall to be removed. Use a keyhole saw to cut the perimeter of the space planned for removal.

4. String speaker wire or cable from the locations of the speakers to the location of the stereo or entertainment center. This may involve running wires down the inside of the wall. Drill a hole through the top plate of the wall and feed the speaker cable down into the space between the wall studs using a fish tape. Fish tape is a semi-rigid flexible metal tape used to push wire into enclosed space. Cut an opening in the drywall of the wall near the entertainment center to pull the ends of the stereo speaker wire through.

5. Connect the stereo speaker wires to the sound system and to the speaker. Make sure that the sound system is turned off while making the connection.

6. Install the stereo speaker into the opening created earlier in the ceiling drywall. Depending on the speaker system, it may use clips or screws to hold it in place. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the speaker installation.

7. Replace any insulation around the speaker. Cover the speaker with additional insulation.
