Types Of False Ceilings

Cover exposed beams with a false ceiling.

Wires, pipes, wooden beams and other unsightly home fixtures can ruin the decor of a basement, attic or other renovated room. Hide these and other undesired items with a false ceiling. Also known as a dropped or suspended ceiling, these cover ups form a secondary ceiling on top of the existing structure with acoustic panels, tin tiles, wooden slabs or other unique building materials.

Acoustic Celings

Acoustical tile is a long-time standard in the false ceiling business. Traditionally hung or placed onto metal grids, these tiles help to absorb noise while creating a quick-to-install cover for an unattractive first ceiling. Although the square or rectangular white acoustical tile is rarely viewed as a desired design component, newer tiles include textured patterns and a variety of shapes.

Gypsum Board

Gypsum boards provide a smooth option to create a false ceiling. This flexible building material is strong and comes in a variety of shapes to create your own ceiling design. Like acoustic panels, gypsum board can also be suspended from a metal grid that covers a first ceiling. Additionally, you can fill the spaces between boards to provide a continuous or smooth ceiling look. Create a more decorative ceiling by simply painting the finished gypsum ceiling in your favorite shade.

Tin Ceiling

The tin or metal ceiling uses finished panels to create an old-fashioned look. Give your room an elegant feel using these shiny, metallic embossed tiles. Tin tiles come in a variety of colors such as bronze, gold, silver or brass and patterns based on manufacturer. Although this is one of the priciest options, time tiles are a distinctive building material that can add an extra splash of decor. Unlike other simpler false ceilings such as acoustical tile, the tin panels may be quite difficult to install. Due to their delicate and intricate nature it may be best to hire a professional experienced in installing tin drop ceilings.

Wood Types

There are many different options for false wooden ceiling. For a more permanent choice, plywood can cover up an ugly existing ceiling. These ceilings are typically made by gluing or nailing strips of the plywood together. A less permanent option that provides room for easier removal is a series of wooden tiles placed on a metal grid structure similar to an acoustical tile ceiling. For a unique, expensive look try a coffered wooden ceiling. Coffers allow you to design a wooden look that features individually recessed panels, giving a multi-level appearance.
