Get A Ceiling Fan Back In Sync

A ceiling fan that has fallen out of balance can drive you crazy with its wobbling and squeaking, and letting the problem continue can eventually loosen the mounting screws and even damage the fan. Fixing the problem is a fairly simple process of tightening everything up and them balancing the blades. You can buy a fan blade balancing kit at your local hardware store, which will come with a choice of weights for various types of fans.

Instructions

1. Turn the fan off. Climb up to it on your ladder with your screwdriver in tow.

2. Test each screw that's accessible to you. Tighten them if necessary. Make sure to check not just the screws on the fan, but the screws holding the fan assembly to the ceiling.

3. Climb down the ladder and turn on the fan. If it's still not running right, proceed to Step 4.

4. Make sure the fan is set to blow down (counterclockwise). Turn it off. Climb up your ladder and bring a weight from your weight kit.

5. Slide the weight onto the side of any one of the blades, putting it at about the middle of the length of the blade. Climb back down the ladder.

6. Turn the fan on and watch its movement. If the wobble motion has lessened but is still present, then slide the weight outward, toward the end of the blade. If the wobble motion has worsened, take the weight off the blade and move it to the next blade.

7. Repeat the trial-and-error process, moving and adjusting the position of the weight until you find the spot that puts the fan back in balance.
