Diy Rustic Ball Lights

Plastic beach balls serve as forms for rustic ball lights.

Ball lights made from unbleached cotton yarn will add a fishing touch to a rustic decor style. These lights can be made in any size. For instance, a large ball light can be used as a ceiling pendant. Whereas a set of rustic ball light pendants will complement a farmhouse table in the kitchen or add a hint of whimsy in a bedroom. A string of small lights can be used on a patio or porch -- or in a barn for a rustic-themed wedding.

Instructions

1. Draw a 4-inch diameter circle with a marker on the top of a plastic ball. Put on plastic gloves. Using your hands, cover the plastic ball with petroleum jelly. Pour 1 cup of wallpaper paste into a large bowl. Next, unravel approximately 6 feet of unbleached cotton worsted weight yarn and place it in the bowl. Let the wallpaper paste thoroughly saturate the yarn.

2. Wrap the yarn around the plastic ball in a random fashion, covering the majority of the ball but leaving some small areas and the area inside the marked plastic circle uncovered. Let the yarn dry for 24 hours.

3. Poke the plastic ball with a sharp knife to deflate it, and then pull the plastic from the hardened yarn and through the 4-inch hole.

4. Cut two 6-inch long pieces of 18-gauge wire with wire snips. Insert a socket kit and light bulb through the 4-inch hole and attach the socket kit cord to the ball with the wire. Cut the excess wire with wire snips and attach the socket kit to an extension cord.

5. Attach a U hook to the ceiling, using a 20-pound anchor screw and a screwdriver. Hook the extension cord over the U hook.
