Install A Ceiling Fan In A Drop Ceiling

Install a Ceiling Fan in a Drop Ceiling

A ceiling fan is an excellent addition to a room, both for decor as well as for added comfort. In a standard room with ceiling joists, a ceiling fan installation is relatively easy. In a room with a drop ceiling, however, this simple task can become a bit more challenging.

Instructions

1. Select the location for the fan to be mounted. Be certain there is adequate clearance on all sides, as well as vertically, if the ceilings are not the standard 8 feet in height. Position the fan so it will be centered in one of the ceiling tiles. This is the case regardless if the tiles are 4 feet x 2 feet or 2 feet square. Once you have identified the tile where the fan will be mounted, remove the tile and set it to the side.

2. Install the electrical junction box between the two "L" brackets. The junction box needs to be centered on the brackets and should extend approximately 1/2 inch below the brackets. This will allow it to be nested in the tile when everything is replaced. It is critical the junction box be mounted securely to the bracket because it will be holding the full weight of the ceiling fan once installed.

3. Mark the outline of the junction box in the center of the tile you removed earlier. Carefully cut out the hole so the junction box will be able to slide smoothly into it. Lay the bracket atop the tile, with the junction box in place inside the hole. Now maneuver the tile with the bracket extending past each end, back into its place in the ceiling. Remove a tile on either side of the original tile to allow access to the concealed area above the ceiling. Make certain the "L" bracket is resting on the ceiling framework at each end of the tile.

4. Cut several pieces of wire long enough to travel from the "L" bracket up to the overhead joist or original ceiling. Hammer nails into place overhead to secure the wires. Leave them hanging loosely near the "L" bracket. Use the level to check the ceiling to be certain it is level, then begin securing the wires to the "L" bracket. Be certain the wires are tight because the weight of the ceiling fan will be pulling against them and slack will result in a sagging tile. Install a minimum of four wires on each "L" bracket. More will add support and strength.

5. Route you electrical wires down through the junction box to a point where you can access them from below. Connect the electrical wires to the ceiling fan, then carefully hold the fan in place. Depending on the model fan you have purchased, there will be a mounting bracket or screws that will attach to the junction box. Once these connections have been made, the ceiling fan will be securely held in place by the overhead brackets supported by the extra support wires. Attach the fan blades, housing and any light fixtures to complete the installation.
