Unique Ceiling Ideas

There are many creative ways to jazz up your ceilings.

During the Victorian era it wasn't uncommon for the upper classes to employ an artist to paint intricate scenery on their foyer or dining room ceilings. This expensive task may not be in your budget, but there are several ideas you can implement to create the wow factor in your home. These unique ceiling ideas add character and personal style to homes and fit varying degrees of financial ability.

Clear Tiles

Many people love the look of exposed duct work and mechanical effects found in rooms with exceptionally high ceilings. However, the expense of heating and cooling all of that square footage is not always so appealing. If you want the look but not the outrageous utility bill, consider clear ceiling tiles. This will allow you to enjoy the ambiance you crave at a price you can live with.

Bamboo Shades

You can buy large bamboo shades often used for porches or privacy at most home improvement stores. Use a staple gun to run these along your ceiling. Create a draped effect by allowing part of the shade to drop a few inches every two or three feet. The amount you allow them to hang depends on the height of your ceiling. Taller ceilings give you room to let them drape several inches, whereas low ceilings require a tighter, albeit no less interesting look. You can achieve a similar style using upholstery fabric.

Fun with Photos

Everyone knows someone who insists on smothering their walls with mismatched frames and outdated photos that they can't bear to take down. If you have boxes full of old photos that you love but don't know tactfully display, you may find your ceiling provides the perfect canvas. This idea can run into some serious money, even if you do it yourself, using your home computer and printer. However, it is still less expensive than installing a new ceiling.

Copy your cherished photos onto a disc. Make sure that each photo is the same size, preferably no smaller than 8 by 10 inches. Print them in black and white and frame them in thin metal frames that can be purchased relatively inexpensively. Order these in bulk online because most department stores won't carry the amount you will need for this project. Use tile glue to adhere them to your ceiling for a unique look in a game room or family room.
