Change A Ceiling Pull Chain Light To A Ceiling Fan

Ceiling fans can be hooked up to ceiling fan rated electrical boxes only.

Installing a ceiling fan doesn't require its own electrical circuit. In fact, any properly mounted ceiling electrical fixture, such as a standard ceiling light, mounted to a cieling fan rated box can be wired into the fan. In most cases, even a light that has a pull chain also has a wall switch somewhere. If that's not the case, and there's no way to turn off the light except by the pull string, the fan you buy must have a pull string as well (most do).

Instructions

1. Shut down the electricity to the existing ceiling light at the house circuit box. Verify there is no power present in the sockets by use of a non contact voltage tester. Remove the screws holding the fixture to the ceiling. Lower it enough to separate the wiring between the light and the ceiling electrical box. Re check all wires in the electrical box to verify there is no power present. Remove the light. You will have three wires left hanging from the box (black, white and bare copper).

2. Attach the mounting bracket that came with your ceiling fan to the ceiling electrical box, using the provided screws. Pull the wire ends down around the bracket so they're still accessible.

3. Twist the copper ground wire from the ceiling box around the green grounding screw on the mounting bracket and tighten.

4. Carry the can up the ladder without the paddles. Connect the white and black wires the fan to the corresponding wires from the electrical box by holding the wires together and twisting a wire nut around both. If the fan has an additional blue wire, for an attached light, twist the blue wire in with the black ones.

5. Lift the fan to the electrical box and line up the screw holes on the fan canopy to those on a mounting bracket. Insert the provided screws. Install the paddles. Turn on the power and test the fan.
