Determine The Best Ceiling Fan Size

Determine the Best Ceiling Fan Size

Fitting a ceiling fan to a room requires measuring the area of the room and the span of the fan. The best fit is a marriage of a fan being large enough to provide good air flow in a room without damaging the walls when it swings. Ceiling fan vendors and Internet websites have charts that indicate the sizes of ceiling fans and the sizes of the rooms in which they best fit, but the charts differ a bit across the board. This means that the perfect ceiling fan is mostly about the owner's preference. If it's not too big or too small and provides a good breeze, then it's a great fit.

Instructions

1. Use a tape measure to measure the length and width of the space in which you want to install the ceiling fan. Multiply the length and the width together to get the area of the space. For instance, if a room is 20 feet by 17 feet, the area will be 340 feet.

2. Measure the space from the floor to the ceiling. A ceiling fan shouldn't hang lower than seven feet, because then it poses a risk of hurting someone and it's not a good look for decor. If the ceiling is higher than nine feet, you don't need to measure it because you know, just by looking at it, that you'll need to install a down-rod on the fan.

3. Measure the size of the ceiling fan by extending the tape measure to the tip of one blade and across the fan motor to the tip of the opposite blade. The width in inches is the size of the ceiling fan.

4. Use a ceiling fan size chart to assist you in purchasing a fan. Remember, though, that the recommended size is just a guideline. If the design you like is slightly larger or smaller than the recommended size, you can still install it, as long as it won't swing into the walls and damage the space.
