Change Ceiling Flush Mount Light Socket

Most modern ceiling light installations have flush mount fixtures. In this configuration, the outlet box and wiring connections are recessed into the ceiling so the light fixture mounts flush with the surface of the ceiling. When installing a ceiling light fixture or retrofitting a new fixture, you should give consideration to the weight of the fixture. Heavy fixtures require the outlet box to be mounted directly to a joist in the ceiling. Also check local codes to verify that solderless connections are permitted and, if so, use screw-on wire connectors.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to the circuit at the fuse box or circuit breaker.

2. Take the glass globe or shade off the existing fixture and remove the light bulb(s).

3. Unscrew the cap nut in the center of the fixture. Remove the adjacent mounting screws on the fixture and gently pull the fixture clear of the ceiling and outlet box, exposing the wires.

4. Disconnect the black (hot) wire first. Screw a wirenut connector on the end of the black wire then tuck the wire back up into the outlet box.

5. Disconnect the white (neutral) wire. Screw a wire connector on the end of the white wire then tuck the wire back up into the outlet box.

6. Support the light fixture with one hand and disconnect the bare ground wire. Lower the fixture to the ground.

7. Hold the replacement fixture up to the outlet box and connect the ground wire with a screw-on connector.

8. Pull the white (neutral) wire down out of the outlet box and remove the screw-on connector. Connect the white wire to the white wire in the replacement fixture with a screw-on connector.

9. Pull the black (hot) wire down out of the outlet box and remove the screw-on connector. Connect the black wire to the black wire in the replacement fixture with a screw-on connector.

10. Place the new fixture up against the outlet box. Screw the center cap nut onto the stud to secure the fixture, then install adjacent mounting screws.

11. Screw the nipple for the globe or shade (if required) onto the stud.

12. Install the light bulb(s) and the globe or shade. Restore power from the fuse box or circuit breaker and test the light.
