Hang A Vintage Lamp

Many vintage lamps were designed to hang from the ceiling.

Vintage lamps provide a classic and stylish look to your home. Hanging lamps have a long electrical cord that plugs into a socket and are specifically designed to hang from the ceiling. Some lamps of this type even have chain or decoration over the cord to help it blend into the design of the room. Hanging a vintage lamp gives you more light in a room, while also providing a decorative element.

Instructions

1. Pick the location where you want to hang the vintage lamp, taking into consideration the length of the cord and where the electrical outlet is placed. Stand on the ladder and mark the spot with your pencil. Stretch a measuring tape from this point to the wall containing the electrical outlet. Place a mark every foot or so for the placement of the hooks. Place a mark where the ceiling and wall intersect. Add a mark halfway down the wall from the intersection point.

2. Fold the wings of the toggle back along its length. Drill a hole in the place you marked large enough for the folded wings of the toggle to pass through. Screw the toggle into the ceiling. Once through the hole, the two wings on either side of the toggle will release and press against the other side of the ceiling, keeping the toggle from popping out of the wall. Pull down on the toggle to check that they have released. Slide the hanging lamp onto the toggle's hook.

3. Place screw-in hooks at the places marked, moving from the hanging lamp to the wall where the lamp will plug into the socket. Hold the hook screw-side against the wall and tap it with the hammer until it begins to push into the wall. Screw the hook in with your hand until the hook is flush with the wall.

4. Slide the electrical cord of the lamp through each of the hooks, moving from the center of the room to the wall. Place a hook at the the intersection of the ceiling and wall and another hook below it halfway down on the wall at the places marked. Thread the cord through these hooks.

5. Release the cord and let it drop to the floor. Plug the end of the cord into the electrical outlet.
