Remove An Existing Hunter Ceiling Fan

Hunter ceiling fans are one way to circulate the air in your home while accentuating the look of your room. Removing an existing Hunter ceiling fan to install a ceiling light fixture or a newer fan is not much different from removing any other brand. Ceiling fans install and remove in generally the same way. The Hunter ceiling fan does have a plate between the fan blade brackets and the lower housing. This plate requires removal to access the fan blade brackets.

Instructions

1. Turn off the circuit breaker that powers the wall switch to the Hunter ceiling fan. Set up a stepladder under the fan. Remove the lightbulbs from the light sockets. Turn the thumbscrews securing the light sconces counterclockwise with your fingers, and remove the sconces from the ceiling fan.

2. Remove the screws securing the light housing to the upper housing with a Phillips-head screwdriver. The screws are near the top of the light housing. Pull the light housing away from the upper housing, and pull the electrical connector apart with your fingers. Set the light housing out of the way.

3. Turn the three screws securing the plate below the fan blade connecting brackets counterclockwise with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the plate away from the fan, and use the Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the two screws that secure each fan blade bracket to the fan housing. Remove all of the blades from the fan.

4. Look for screws near the top edge of the canopy cover. Remove the screws with the Phillips-head screwdriver and pull the canopy away from the housing. Some Hunter ceiling fans do not use securing screws. Twist the canopy counterclockwise to unlock it from the base of the ceiling fan.

5. Loosen the screws securing the base of the fan to the ceiling. Twist the fan base counterclockwise to unhook the base from the mounting plate. Position the base on the hook extending from the mounting plate. This allows the base to hang while you disconnect the wires.

6. Untwist the wire caps connecting the house ceiling wires to the Hunter fan. Separate the wires and twist the caps over each of the bare house wires. Remove the screw securing the green ground wire from the fan to the mounting plate. Unhook the fan base from the mounting plate and set it aside.

7. Remove the two screws securing the mounting plate to the ceiling junction box with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the mounting plate away from the ceiling.
