Wire The Remote Control For A Harbor Breeze Ceiling Fan

A remote control ceiling fan is a convenience.

Harbor Breeze ceiling fans are available at Lowe's home improvement stores and are a popular choice. A remote control can be added to a Harbor Breeze ceiling fan to make operation more convenient. However, the addition of a remote control to any ceiling fan may cause the light or fan to turn on by itself occasionally due to stray radio waves. For many people, the convenience that the remote control supplies is well worth the occasional inconvenience.

Instructions

1. Shut off the circuit breaker that supplies electricity to the ceiling fan. The circuit breaker is in the electrical panel for the house. If the breaker is not labeled, turn on the fan and turn off circuit breakers in succession until the fan shuts off.

2. Remove the outer housing on the ceiling fan to access the fan's wiring. The housing is secured with several screws that are removed with a Phillips screwdriver.

3. Disconnect the black wire coming from the electrical box in the ceiling from the one or two wires of the ceiling fan. The fan will have two wires connected to the black wire coming from the electrical box if the fan includes a light.

4. Detach the white wire coming from the electrical box in the ceiling from the wire on the ceiling fan. If the ground wire of the ceiling fan is attached to a ground in the electrical box, detach those wires from each other.

5. Connect the green wire from the remote transmitter (the ground wire) to the ground wire coming from the electrical box, if there is one. Twist the two wires together using a wire nut. Wrap the wire nut and the wires with electrical tape. Repeat this procedure for the black and white wires coming from the transmitter, connecting them to the black and white wires coming from the electrical box. Do not connect the white wire that is on the same side of the transmitter as the red and blue wires.

6. Twist the other white wire from the transmitter together with the white wire from the ceiling fan, using a wire nut. Wrap the wire nut and the wires with electrical tape. Connect the blue transmitter wire to the blue ceiling fan wire with a wire nut and electrical tape. Repeat this procedure with the red transmitter wire and the black ceiling fan wire. If the ceiling fan does not have a light, there will be no blue wire on the ceiling fan and the blue wire from the transmitter can be left unconnected.

7. Stuff the wires into the electrical box and place the transmitter in a location that will not interfere with the housing being reinstalled. This procedure may take several tries to be successful in finding the right spot for the transmitter. Replace the housing and turn on the circuit breaker. Do not forget to install batteries in the remote control unit before attempting to use it.
