Clean Antique Tile

Ceramic tiles were used as flooring as far back as the 4th millenium B.C.E., mostly in the Near and Far East, according to the National Park Service. Antique tiles provide a unique touch to a room, but keeping the tiles as clean as possible can be a challenge. Using caustic cleaners can damage the tiles, as well as any glaze or coating that covers them. Cleaning antique tiles regularly can keep their appearance as perfect as possible, even when they are on a surface that is used often.

Instructions

1. Cover the antique tile with water before cleaning. This will saturate the pores in the tile, preventing cleaning agents from entering the body of the tile.

2. Use a plastic pot scrubber to loosen and remove some of the dirt. This tool will not harm the surface of the tiles like most scrubbing techniques would.

3. Apply a commercial floor cleaner that is not soap-based, preferably one intended for cleaning ceramic tile. Scrub the cleaner off with a rag.

4. Mix together an equal amount of bleach and a neutral household detergent and apply the mixture to the tile in order to eliminate mold, mildew or other organic materials growing on the tile. Do not leave the bleach on the tile for more than a few minutes, to avoid efflorescence damage.

5. Use a brush with nylon or natural bristles to scrub the tile after applying the mixture in the previous step.

6. Rinse the tile thoroughly with warm water, and dry it well.
