Cover A Recessed Light Opening In The Ceiling

To install recessed lighting in the ceiling, cutting holes in the drywall is necessary. When you are done with using recessed lighting, this creates a problem: removing the lights leaves holes in the ceiling that may allow drafts from the attic to enter the home. To solve the problem, you need to patch the hole with drywall compound. A well-done patch is invisible and will make your ceiling look as good as new.

Instructions

1. Purchase a piece of drywall that is the same thickness as the drywall requiring patching. Cut the piece of drywall slightly larger than the hole in the wall.

2. Trace around the piece of drywall over the hole in the wall.

3. Cut out the recessed hole with a jigsaw to the size of the drywall patch.

4. Cut a piece of 1-by-3 wood that is 6 inches longer than the hole.

5. Slide the 1-by-3 into the hole. Insert a screw through the ceiling on each end to secure the wood strip.

6. Insert the scrap piece of drywall into the hole. Drive two screws through the drywall into the 1-by-3.

7. Apply premixed joint compound to the patch with a 6-inch taping knife, feathering the compound out along the ceiling to make the patch as smooth as possible. Allow the compound to dry. Repeat this step three times in total.

8. Sand the patch smooth and paint it the same color as the wall.
