Ceiling lights come with mounting brackets, which are plates designed to attach to a standard electrical box, then receive the light fixture. Most units today are simple to install and require no more than a few minutes. Make sure the new light you buy is at least as wide at the base as the old one, so it doesn't leave any unpainted ceiling area exposed.
Instructions
1. Turn off the electricity to the existing fixture at the circuit box. Set your ladder under the fixture. Take down the fixture, removing the screws that hold it to the ceiling and disconnecting the wires under it.
2. Remove the existing mounting bracket from the old light, by unscrewing the screws holding it there. You should be left with an exposed ceiling electrical box and three wires emerging from it: one black, one white and one bare ground wire.
3. Hold the mounting bracket for the new light up to the electrical box. Line up the screw holes of the bracket to those of the electrical box (they should be in the same position). Attach the bracket with the provided machine screws. Pull the wire ends down through the opening in the bracket so they're still accessible.
4. Twist the ground wire around the green grounding screw that's on the bracket. Tighten the
5. Position the new light unit near the bracket. Connect the black wire from the light to the black wire from the box by holding the wires next to each other and twisting a wire cap over both of them. Do the same for the white wires from the box and the light.
6. Lift the light toward the bracket, tucking the wires up into the box as you do. Set the light unit against the bracket. Line up the screw holes between the light and the bracket. Use the provided mounting screws to attach the light. Turn on the power.
