RV rooftop air conditioners make the journey more enjoyable.
Cool air on a warm summer day is one of the luxuries of owning an RV. Air conditioners not only cool the air, but also keeps humidity levels low. Dashboard air conditioners in engine-based RVs do not cool off the entire unit because they are just like the air conditioners in your car. Installing a rooftop air conditioner for your comfort is an easy weekend do-it-yourself project.
Instructions
1. Find a location strong enough to support the unit on the roof. Be sure that doesn't have anything such as lights below it. Keep the edges of the unit at least 8 inches away from the edge of the roof. In many cases, roof-mounted air conditioners will install in place of an existing vent.
2. Cut a hole in the roof big enough to fit the connections between the roof portion and the ceiling portion of the unit. Make sure your measurements are accurate before cutting.
3. Mark where the mounting bolts will go by placing the unit on the roof and tracing through the holes with a marker. Install the bolts in the interior of the RV that will hold the unit in place.
4. Mount the with a drill. Secure it with the ceiling mount.
5. Apply sealant where the air conditioner meets the metal of the roof.
6. Connect the wiring to proper locations for the ceiling units. The wires are color-coded and will vary based on the model you are installing. Consult the owner's manual for verification.
7. Plug the into the roof unit and turn the power on to the air conditioner to test that it is working properly.
