Disconnect Ceiling Fan Lights

Disconnecting a ceiling fan light is a simple home improvement project. Ceiling fans usually include an optional light fixture or a cover plate for use without the light fixture. Existing fans with light fixtures attached will need this cover plate installed to cover the exposed wires. Finding this plate or cover may prove difficult for older fans. Contact the manufacturer to inquire about ordering a cover plate. Check home improvement centers for a generic cover plate that might work.

Instructions

1. Turn off the electric that supplies the fan and light fixture to help avoid electrical shocks. With the fan and light on, turn off the circuit breakers one at a time until the fan and light go off. This ensures that no electric current is running through the fan.

2. Place a ladder under the fan so that you can easily reach the fan's light fixture. Remove the light bulbs and glass globes, if applicable, from the light fixture.

3. Remove the two or three screws located on the side of the light fixture that mounts it to the fan's body. A Phillips screwdriver should do the trick. Retain the screws to use when mounting the cover plate. Allow the fixture to hang from the fan, exposing the wires.

4. Remove the wire nuts connecting the light fixtures wires to the ceiling fan's wiring. A blue wire from the fan is usually the common one that connects to a black wire feeding the fixture's pull chain switch. The neutral wires are colored white while the ground wires are green or bare. If the blue "common" wire is hard wired to the pull chain switch, cut the wire with a pair of electrician's pliers and cap with a wire nut.

5. Install wire nuts to the ends of the wires connected to the light fixture, and push them into the fan's body. Attach the cover plate with the screws that mounted the light fixture. Turn on the electric, and test the fan.
