Make Your Own Ceiling Fan Pull Chain

Create a ceiling fan pull chain

Ceiling fans come in a wide variety of styles and colors and are more affordable than ever. Decorative hardware accents that look like brushed metal are often plastic cleverly tinted to give the appearance of metal. Cost cutting saves money, and no one is the wiser because ceiling fans are usually mounted high enough to escape close scrutiny. However, ceiling fan pull chains hang within close view and get noticed. Most new ceiling fans have a standard beaded chain pull, but for something out of the ordinary, try making your own ceiling fan pull chain.

Instructions

1. Match the chain pull to fan hardware or room decor

Purchase chain decorating and creating items at a craft store. Shop in the jewelry making department for needed items and select jewelry making stones, crystals, ceramic or wood beads that complement the fan and room decor. A decorative chain pull about two inches long made with crystals, stones, and decorative jewelry hardware will be the result.

2. Start with beaded chain

Buy beaded chain long enough to hang from the ceiling fan to where it will be pulled. Lengths will vary, depending on how high the ceiling fan is mounted. If you add new beaded chain to the existing chain, be aware that the chain color may be visibly different where the new chain starts.

3. Use a small jewelry loop similar to a key chain loop

The end of the beaded chain has a tubular receptacle that locks a chain bead into place. At the end of the tubular bead lock is a small hole. Run a small jewelry loop clasp, similar to the kind used on key chains, only smaller and made for creating necklaces, through the end of the bead lock

4. Try polished stones

Measure a three-inch length of jewelry craft fish line. Tie a double knot at one end, leaving as little line as possible sticking out. Snip off excess line. Thread a small-sized jewelry end cap through the fish line, followed by a small bead of matching size. Top the bead with another end cap of matching size.

5. Choose decorative beads

Place a medium-sized bead above the small end cap, followed by a medium size bead end cap. String a medium size bead, then another medium end cap. Follow with a small crystal, then a large size bead end cap. Put a large bead on string (this is your main focal point bead) and top with large bead end cap. Finish using the same pattern from below the large bead.

6. Craft gems are handy

To finish using the same pattern from below the large bead, place a small crystal, then a medium end cap followed by a medium size bead capped off with another medium end cap. Add a small end cap, followed by a small bead and then a small end cap with a loop built onto it. The end cap with a loop twists onto the key chain style loop hanging from the tubular bead chain lock. Pull the line up through the loop until excess line can be knotted. Snip excess line off.
