Turn a ceiling into a glowing night sky.
Many modern home ceilings are a variation of white or wood. Add subtle or dramatic flair to a ceiling with paint and artwork. Hanging items from the ceiling requires appropriate anchoring hardware to keep them secure and reduce the danger of injury from falling artwork.
Starry Night
Paint the ceiling a deep blue or purple. Project stars onto the ceiling with a purchased or rented star projector that shows realistic constellations based on a specific date or location. Turn off the lights and turn on the projector. Dab a small dot of glow-in-the-dark paint on each projected star to create a starry night sky when the lights are off. A base paint with a satin or eggshell finish can help brighten the room during the day.
Large Artwork
Large canvas paintings can make a room feel dwarfed when hung on the walls, but hanging them on a ceiling there can add interest to the room and keep the art visible without taking up shelf and furniture space. This approach is popular with vaulted ceilings, where art can be viewed without neck strain. Wraparound canvases, where the artwork continues around the sides of the canvas and doesn't require a frame, can help reduce the weight of ceiling-hung artwork for easier hanging and safety.
Kinetic Artwork
Kinetic sculpture or art is art that moves. Adding moving items such as colorful pinwheels and mobiles to the ceiling can add a feeling of vitality and excitement to a room. Outdoor decorations like wind chimes and porch hangings can be set in motion when a fan is placed on a high shelf.
Stenciling
Ceilings are often textured, making stenciling art difficult but not impossible. Add subtle flair to a ceiling with stencils that aren't detailed and don't have fine lines. Thick vines with leaves or block characters are easiest to see. Dab the paint onto the stencil rather with a brush or sponge (a technique known as stippling) or using regular brushstrokes; dabbing with a brush generally fills the gaps in the texture better.
