Mount A Ceiling Fan On A Slanted Ceiling

A flat ceiling surface is not always available to install a ceiling fan on. Sometimes, to center a ceiling fan in a room, you have to install it on a slanted portion of the ceiling. The ceiling fan manufacturer should have the needed parts for you to install the ceiling fan on these surfaces.

What You Need

The mounting hardware that is included with regular ceiling fans usually allows you to mount the fan on ceilings that are slightly slanted. However, you will need additional hardware to mount a ceiling fan on ceilings that slant at an angle of more than 30 degrees. To sufficiently mount a ceiling fan on a slanted ceiling, you will need a ceiling fan slope adapter kit. This hardware allows you to install the ceiling fan on ceilings with a slope of up to what is specified on the kit.

Limitations

The one type of ceiling fan that can't be used with ceiling adapters are flush-mounted ceiling fans. Many ceiling fans have downrods, which is the thin rod that runs from the mounting bracket down to the ceiling fan body and blades. Flush-mounted ceiling fans do not have a downrod and are attached closely to the canopy, which covers the mounting brackets, preventing them from having the necessary room to be correctly connected to a slanted ceiling.

Additional Considerations

You will likely need to obtain a longer downrod for the ceiling fan if the ceiling is especially slanted to a higher degree. This longer extension downrod, which is usually sold separately from the adapter kit, will provide the extra clearance to prevent the ceiling fan blades from striking the ceiling as the fan spins. You may also need additional wire to go from the mounting bracket to the ceiling fan.

Tips

An efficient height for the fan blades is approximately 8 to 9 feet above the floor to help achieve the best cooling effect. If, after installation, the blades appear to be unbalanced or loose, check that the screws that hold the blades in position are all tight. Once you ensure the screws are tight, make certain that the bracket is tightly attached. If the fan still wobbles, use a balancing kit, which includes a weight that you attach to each blade, and test to see if the additional weight removes the wobble.
