Manufactured homes feature one of three types of ceilings---fiberboard, textured gypsum wallboard and suspended ceilings. Fiberboard and wallboard ceilings typically come in 4 foot wide sections that run the width of the home. This makes replacement panels difficult to find and even more difficult to get into the home.
Fiberboard
A fiberboard ceiling is one of the most difficult to replace in a manufactured home. This is because most mobile home manufacturers use very large panels that cannot be easily sourced by homeowners. The best way to repair this type of ceiling is to find the closest matching panel available and paint the ceiling to cover any differences.
Textured Gypsum
Textured gypsum wallboard ceilings are also difficult to replace. This is due to both the very large size of the panels as well as the difficulty in matching the texture. The best option here is to match the texture and thickness as closely as possible. A fresh coat of paint will hide some of the dissimilarities.
Suspended Ceiling
In the event that you cannot find an adequate match to the fiberboard or textured gypsum ceiling in the manufactured home, you have the option of installing a suspended ceiling. The benefit of these ceilings is that they are easily repaired or replaced with parts available to you. Additionally, the panels typically come in smaller sections, which makes them easy to work with.
