What Do If Your Ceiling Fan Wobbles

A ceiling fan should spin without wobbling.

A properly installed ceiling fan should not wobble while the blades are spinning. If you install the ceiling fan yourself, avoid a wobbling problem by carefully following the fan manufacturer's installation instructions. If the fan is already installed and is wobbling, a few simple adjustments may fix it.

Troubleshoot

To test whether the wobbling is caused by the blades or the fan itself, turn off the ceiling fan and remove all the blades. Turn the fan back on. If the wobbling has stopped, the problem is with one or more of the blades. If the wobbling continues, the problem is likely with the fan connections.

Tighten the Fan Connections

Examine the fan's structural integrity and make certain that all the fan connections are secure. Loose connections may be caused by less-than-perfect installation of the fan or by normal use of the fan over time. Check the screws in the fan's canopy and hanger bracket to make sure the fan is securely mounted to the ceiling. Make sure the screws holding each blade to its metal support are tight. Also, check the tightness of the glass shades around the fan lights. If any are not secure, tighten them.

Adjust the Blades

Once the fan is securely connected, turn your attention to the fan's blades. Examine each individual blade. Hold a yardstick vertically, pressed against the edge of each blade and rising up to touch the ceiling. Measure the distance from the ceiling to each blade to make sure the distance to each one is the same. If a blade is misaligned, gently bend the metal support that holds the blade until the blade is properly aligned.

Use a Blade Balancing Kit

A blade balancing kit usually contains one small clip-on weight and two or three small stick-on weights. If your fan didn't come with a balancing kit or you no longer have the kit, purchase one from a home improvement store. Using the fan's pull chain, turn the ceiling fan to the speed at which it wobbles the most. Then turn the fan off with the wall switch. Attach the clip-on weight to any fan blade, either at the end of the blade or at a halfway point. Turn the fan on and observe. If the wobble is gone, install one of the stick-on weights to the top of the blade, in the same spot. Check the balance in this manner on each of the fan blades. Test the clip-on weight on each blade, one at a time, and run the fan to see if the added weight stops the wobbling.
