Learn Roman Art

Statues were common in Roman art.

Knowledge of Roman art plays an essential role in developing a complete understanding of art history and the progression of art from the Roman era through today. Roman art began around 500 BC. Prior to this time, the Romans copied the art of the Etruscans. When the Romans conquered the Greeks around 200 BC, they began copying Greek art. Unlike the Greeks, Romans were realistic in their sculpture and portraits, attempting to create an accurate likeness of a person. Sculptures, frescoes and canvas paintings were the main methods the Romans used to produce their artwork. Roman art played an important role in art history and set the stage for many styles and eras of art to come. Follow some specific steps to learn the basics---and beyond---of Roman art.
