Tie Fan Leaves

Avoid unsightly brown leaves by tying them before transplant.

Palm trees are not cheap, and when you prepare one for transplant, you want to do everything you can to protect the tree and give it the best chance at survival. Nurseries often bind, or tie, the fan leaves on a palm to reduce moisture loss and prevent the leaves from turning brown. Tie the fan leaves up on your palm tree to protect it from transplant stress.

Instructions

1. Tie the end of a piece of rope around the trunk of your palm tree, just below the bud.

2. Spiral the rope up the trunk and around the bases of the fan leaves. Push each fan leaf upward as you wrap the rope around the underside of the leaf. You want to trap the bases of the fan leaves around the bud so the fronds point toward the sky.

3. Continue to spiral the rope upward, trapping the bases of the fan leaves around the bud and the rest of the leaves in a bundle above the bud that looks like the top of a pineapple.

4. Tie off the rope.
