While you'll want a carpet that is stylish and comfortable, it also needs to fit your budget.
Knowing how much carpet to use in a room is the first step to changing the look and feel inside your home. While it can be exciting to select from a variety of colors, piles, and textures of carpet samples, when it comes to choosing a carpet, you'll need to know how much the carpet is going to cost. To price a carpet for a room, you'll need to measure the room well and then head to your nearest carpet outlet or home improvement store with your calculator.
Instructions
1. Measure the length of the room you are working on at the longest part of the room and write this number down. Measure the width of your room also at the widest point and write the measurement down. Measure the room a second time to be sure your numbers are consistent.
2. Multiply the length of the longest side of the room by the width of the widest side of the room to find the approximate square footage of your room. A 10-by-15-foot room, for example, is 150 square feet.
3. Look over the carpet samples available at your local carpet retailer and select the sample you like. Write down the price per square foot as stated on the tag. If the item is on sale, then be sure to also write down the original price in case your purchase will occur after the sale date.
4. Multiply the number of square feet in your room by the price per square foot of the sample you have chosen to find to cost of finishing the room with each sample. For example: Using a $1.99 per square foot carpet on a 150-square-foot room would cost $298.50, while a $2.99 carpet would cost $448.50.
5. Factor in the sales tax for your area to determine the final estimated price of your carpet for the room by multiplying the determined cost of the carpet in the quantity needed times the sales tax. For example, a five percent sales tax would be .05 times the cost of the carpet $448.50, which equals $22.43. Add the calculated amount of sales tax to the cost of the carpet to find a total price of $470.93.
