Install A Ceiling Fan On A Porch

Installing a ceiling fan on your porch will make the space a whole different experience in the summer, and it's a relatively easy project. A standard outdoor ceiling fan is made of resin or other material that can withstand moisture, with the wiring and installation procedures mostly the same as with an indoor fan. One additional step you should take is to seal the perimeter of the fan canopy (where it meets the ceiling) with clear latex caulk, to hold out moisture. The caulk can be easily cut away if you ever have to take down the fan.

Instructions

1. Cut power to the existing porch ceiling fixture at the house fuse box. Position a ladder under the fixture. Remove the fixture with a screwdriver, taking out the mounting screws and disconnecting the wiring behind it. Let the wires from ceiling electrical box hang down.

2. Install the mounting bracket in your fan kit onto the ceiling electrical box, putting mounting screws through the bracket and into the mounting holes on the electrical box with a screwdriver. Pull the wires down through the open middle of the bracket.

3. Put the fan together and walk it up the ladder. Wire it by connecting the black wire from the fan to the black wire from the ceiling with a wire cap, then wrapping the connection in electrical tape. Do the same for the white wire from the fan and the white wire from the ceiling.

4. Twist the bare copper grounding wire from the ceiling around the green grounding screw inside the fan canopy (the part of the unit that connects to the bracket).

5. Raise the fan to the bracket, tucking the wiring up into the electrical box. Mount the fan onto the bracket, using the provided mounting screws and a screwdriver.

6. Turn on the power and test the fan. If everything works, run a thin bead of clear latex caulk around the seam where the fan canopy meets the ceiling.
