A close-mount fan is for lower ceilings.
There are a few standard ways to mount a ceiling fan, depending on the configuration of your room. Some models come with extension rods that hold the fan down from a high ceiling. For a lower ceiling, you need a close-mount kit, which puts the fan housing right up on the ceiling and keeps the blades as high as possible. Measure the width of the existing fixture when you buy your fan, and make sure the fan base is wider than the fixture so it will completely cover the area that the old fixture covered, avoiding the need to touch up the paint.
Instructions
1. Turn off power to the existing fixture at the fuse box. Take down the existing fixture by removing the screws at the base, lowering it to expose the wiring, then disconnecting the wiring. Leave the house wires dangling from the exposed electrical box.
2. Set the mounting
3. Put together the fan, except the blades. Walk it up the ladder and set it on top, close enough for the wires to reach each other. (Note: Some models have a hook on the mounting bracket that will allow you to hang the fan housing sideways off the bracket while you wire it.)
4. Attach the black wire from the fan to the black wire from the ceiling, twisting a wire cap of the two exposed wire ends. Do the same with the two white wires. Wrap the bare ground wire from the house around the green grounding screw in the fan housing.
5. Lift the fan housing to the electrical box, tucking the wiring into the ceiling as you do. Line up the screw holes between the mounting bracket and the fan housing. Attach with the provided machine screws.
6. Attach the fan blades with the provided screws. Turn on the power.
