Insert Fiber Optics In Your Ceiling

Fiber optic cable is hidden best above the ceiling in most residences.

Fiber optic cable generally is run when a home is built, usually to accommodate offices and networks throughout the house. Running the cable yourself, however, may be necessary if you remodel your house. The easiest way to hide a fiber optics cable is to insert it through the ceiling and into the attic.

Instructions

1. Place a stud finder on the ceiling of the room in which the fiber optic cable will start. Turn on the stud finder, and use it to locate the ceiling joists. Mark the ceiling where joists are located. Decide where to drill a hole for fiber optic cable in the ceiling; the hole can't be in a joist. Choose and mark a location for the hole that is as close to a corner as possible to adhere to the old rule of "out of sight, out of mind." Repeat the procedure for the ceiling in which the fiber optic cable will end.

2. Drill upward into the first room's ceiling in the place where you want to put the hole, and then use the same technique to make the hole in the other room's ceiling. Use a drill bit that is slightly larger than the width of the fiber optic cable to make the hole. Do not attempt to drill down through the ceiling from the attic, especially if the ceiling is drywall. Drywall tends to "explode" out the back of a drilled hole, and that frayed area should be in the attic where it isn't visible.

3. Push the fiber optic cable's tip through the hole you drilled in the ceiling of the room in which the cable will start. Push several feet of the cable into the attic so it doesn't fall out. Go into the attic, and turn on the attic lights. Step on only the attic's ceiling joists. Find the fiber optic cable you inserted through the ceiling, and pull more of it straight through the hole, gathering enough to span the distance to the other hole. Take the cable with you to the other hole. Push the cable through that second hole, downward into the room in which the cable will end.
