The righ tceiling fan can enhance a room's decor.
Customizing a ceiling fan is an easy and stylish way to update or enhance a room decor. In most rooms, the ceiling fan is the focal point of the ceiling. In some homes, however, the ceiling fan is forgotten or overlooked when considering the decor, style, and accessories of the room. A ceiling fan can enhance your decor or stick out like a sore thumb if it does not match the room's overall style and theme.
Instructions
1. Draw a sketch of your completed room or take a photograph. Note the room's key elements, including the wall, ceiling, trim and floor colors, and the color, style and trim of the furniture in the room.
2. Choose from fan blade materials including wood, teak, stainless steel, polished metal, woven bamboo, woven wicker, plastic and clear acrylic. Keep in mind that wood can warp or split in homes located near the beach and metal blades can rust in ocean-front homes.
3. Select fan blades in colors matching your decor, like an accent or border color or a wood grain that matches your furniture or baseboards. Choose clear acrylic blades if you want them to visually disappear. Evaluate various fan blade shapes, including carved leaves, square tips, pointed tips and ovals, as well as special-order shapes, like baseball bat-shaped blades.
4. Purchase fan blades in a length appropriate for the room. Standard lengths include 36 inches, 42 inches, 44 inches, and 52 inches. The longer and wider the fan blade, the more air is circulated downward. Large woven blades can be stylish in both small and large rooms.
5. Select a fan base style that complements your fan blades. Fan bases are available without light kits or with coordinated light fixtures included. Fan bases come in modern, traditional, and decorative styles as well as a variety of finishes, like matte, gloss, bronze, brass, polished silver, antique silver and pewter. Choose a fan base with the UL rating "wet" if your fan will be installed outdoors or in high-humidity areas.
6. Choose a light kit that is functional and aesthetically pleasing. The light kit should not extend low enough to touch the heads of people in the room. Purchase a kit with standard bowls or glass shades, or buy the light fixture and the shades separately. Select shades or bowls that complement your decor -- bowls can feature painted or etched designs, while shades are available in standard and designer shapes, such as cones, tulips, leaves and lilies.
7. Find light bulbs that meet your wattage requirements and energy usage standards, and complement the glass shade and fan style you selected. Bulbs come in a variety of colors, frosts and shapes.
8. Purchase pulls that match the decor and theme of the room. For example, a beach house might display sailboat or tropical fish fan pulls, while a room with formal French decor might have crystal fan pulls.
