Modern ceiling fans are almost as easy to install as ceiling light fixtures. Generally, it's just a matter of connecting like-colored wires (black to black, white to white), with a few other steps. Make sure the ceiling canopy of the fan you buy is at least as large as the ceiling fixture it's replacing, so you don't leave a ring of unpainted ceiling around the fan housing. Westinghouse is a popular brand of ceiling fan, and its fans come in kits.
Instructions
1. Turn off the power to the existing fixture at the house circuit box. Access the fixture from your ladder. Remove it from the ceiling, using your screwdriver to take out the mounting screws. Disconnect the wiring, leaving the wires from the ceiling electrical box hanging down loosely.
2. Hold the mounting bracket that comes with your Westinghouse fan kit to the ceiling electrical box and attach it, using the provided screws and a screwdriver.
3. Assemble the fan on the floor, following the manufacturer's directions. Take it to the top of the ladder, setting the wires from the top as close as possible to the wires from the ceiling box.
4. Connect the wires from the fan to the wires from the ceiling box, using wire nuts to attach like-colored wires (black to black, white to white). Wrap each connection in electrician's tape.
5. Wrap the copper grounding wire from the ceiling electrical to the green screw in the fan housing. Tighten the screw.
6. Wrap the copper grounding wire from the ceiling electrical to the green screw in the fan housing. Tighten the screw.
7. Hold the fan up to the bracket and mount the housing to the electrical box, using the screws that came with the kit. Turn on the power and test the fan.
