Casablanca Ceiling Fan
Ceiling fans should not shudder. The wobble is usually caused by blades that aren't balanced or from improper installation. Here's fix yours.
Instructions
1. Do a visual inspection. Make sure that the motor is installed flat relative to the ceiling. If you see a gap between the base and the ceiling grab the fan and try to move it. If it shakes, the mounting screws could need tightening, to verify go to Step Two.
2. Take off all the blades. Run the fan without them. If you are still getting shudder turn off the fan, go into the mount and tighten all the screws. Try again without the blades. If the wobble is gone, remount the blades.
3. Be aware that if the fan motor didn't wobble without the blades, the blades are either warped, have different weights or they are unbalanced. Stack each of the blades on top of each other to see that their shapes match. If one appears warped, you'll have to replace it. Be sure to get the exact model and serial number from the base of the fan.
4. Measure the protrusion of each blade with a tape measure and make sure they match since most fan blades are installed in a base that allows you to adjust blade length. Pull out or push in each blade as needed. Try again.
5. Use a ruler at the outside tip of the blade to measure the distance from it to the ceiling if the fan still wobbles. With many fans you can gently bend the center metal blade holder until the blades line up at the same angle. Rotate by hand with the power off at eye level to check.
6. Clip a spring loaded clothes pin on one of the blades and see if it stops the shake. Try the clothes pin on each of the different blades. If you see that one diminishes it, try to gradually affix the fan weights or simply tape an increasing number of coins to the back of your fan blades to equalize the weights.
