Paint Dual Colors In Tray Ceilings

Paint is an affordable and simple way to add even more aesthetic appeal to an already stunning tray ceiling. Instead of selecting just one hue to make this architectural feature pop, paint your ceiling in two tones, drawing attention to the uncommon beauty of this feature.

Instructions

1. Select two colors that complement each other well and fit with the room decor These two colors can be completely different hues, such as a light blue and a buttery yellow, or variations of the same shade, like black and gray.

2. Move all furnishings out of the way, and cover the entire space with a plastic, lined paper or fabric drop cloth to save yourself the headache of trying to clean up dripped paint. If you happen to be painting before you have put flooring down in the space, you can skip this step.

3. Prime the ceiling. While priming before you paint is always a good idea, it isn't always mandatory. If you are painting on fresh drywall, you must prime as the drywall must first be sealed with primer before it is ready to accept paint. Also, if you are painting over a darker color with a lighter hue, priming is a good idea.

4. Paint the center of the ceiling with a ceiling paint in a finish that matches the rest of your space. For example, if your walls are matte, your ceiling should be too so they mesh together. Use the lighter of the two colors, because this is the largest part of the ceiling and using the more dominant color will likely prove too bold.

5. Paint the rim of the ceiling the darker hue. If you have a steady hand, you can use a brush to paint a crisp line between the ceiling tray that rests parallel to the floor - the section you have already painted - and the rim, which rests perpendicular to the floor. If you struggle to make this meeting of the colors a blemish-free one, use tape to create a stark line between the two colors. Remove the tape after the paint is dry.
