Texture Ceilings

Textured ceilings are a common feature in many homes. Many ceilings have vaulted architectural features that mimic textures whereas others exhibit a painted texture appearance that is simply an aesthetic notion. If you want to texture your own ceilings, simply follow the steps below.

Instructions

1. Remove all dust and debris from the existing ceiling. Remove popcorn style ceilings with a heavy-duty trowel and an enclosed vacuum apparatus. Remove all items in the room or completely cover with a drop cloth.

2. Wipe down the ceiling surface with a dry or tacky cloth to remove any foreign objects. Make sure the ceilings are smooth and free of damage before you texture them.

3. Cover the floor with a heavy-duty drop cloth.

4. Mix a large bucket of drywall joint compound briefly until it's smooth. The joint compound texture should form peaks, but not drip.

5. Apply the joint compound to the ceiling with a large trowel. Work in small areas and allow the compound to form peaks. Let this dry until it's firm, but not solid.

6. Run the trowel over the surface of the ceiling and knock off any of the semi-dry peaks of joint compound for a rich texture. Let the entire ceiling dry completely.

7. Paint the ceiling with desired interior paint scheme.
