The duct of a kitchen exhaust fan directs humidity and foul odors in the kitchen outside. A kitchen exhaust fan usually mounts in the kitchen's ceiling or in an exterior wall. Always replace a kitchen exhaust fan with one that matches the original fan's size, typically 8 to 12 inches. The size refers to the diameter of the sleeve the fan mounts in. A kitchen exhaust fan uses a switched 120-volt electrical circuit for power.
Instructions
1. Turn off the kitchen's circuit breaker.
2. Access the kitchen exhaust fan's louver. If the exhaust fan mounts in the kitchen's ceiling, set up a ladder in the appropriate spot.
3. Remove the kitchen exhaust fan's louver. If a nut holds the louver in place, remove the nut with the correct size hex-head screwdriver. If the louver attaches to the fan housing with springs, pull down on the louver and expose the springs. Compress each spring until it releases from the fan, and lower the louver.
4. Disconnect the fan motor's power supply. Some fan motors use a plug and receptacle, and some hard-wire into an electrical connection box. If the fan motor uses a plug and receptacle, pull the plug from the receptacle. If the fan motor hard-wires into an electrical box, remove the electrical box's cover with the correct screwdriver. Remove the wire nuts holding the fan motor's wires to the electric-supply wires and pull the fan's wires out of the electrical box.
5. Hold the exhaust fan with one hand and remove the fan's mounting bolts with the correct size hex-head screwdriver. The bolts hold the fan's mounting bracket in the sleeve. Lower the old fan from the sleeve.
6. Prepare the new kitchen exhaust fan. If the new fan uses the old fan's blades, remove the old blades from the old fan and install the blades onto the new fan's shaft. If the new fan uses the old fan's mounting bracket, move the bracket from the old fan to the new fan.
7. Position the new kitchen exhaust fan in the sleeve. Align the fan motor's mounting bracket and bolts with the sleeve.
8. Tighten the exhaust fan's mounting bolts with the correct screwdriver.
9. Rotate the exhaust fan's blades to verify the blades' spin without touching any obstructions. If the blades hit something, identify and adjust the obstruction. If the back-flow damper on top of the kitchen exhaust fan's sleeve rubs on the blades, remove the fan from the sleeve and adjust the blades' position on the motor's shaft. Reinstall the exhaust fan in the sleeve.
10. Connect the fan motor to its power source. If the fan motor uses a plug and receptacle, insert the plug into the sleeve's receptacle. If the fan motor hard-wires to the power source, push the fan motor's wires into the sleeve's electrical connection box. Twist one of the fan motor's wires to one of the power supply's interchangeable wires and cover it with a wire nut. Twist the fan's second wire against the second power supply wire and cover the ends with a wire nut. Replace the electrical box's cover.
11. Replace the kitchen exhaust fan's louver. If a nut holds the louver against the exhaust fan, tighten the nut with the correct screwdriver. If the exhaust fan uses springs to hold its louver against the kitchen ceiling or wall, squeeze the springs together and push the ends of the springs into the slots in the side of the exhaust fan's sleeve. Release the springs and press the louver against the wall or ceiling.
