Cool colors or light, warm shades can make your ceiling appear higher.
Light-colored ceilings often appear taller than dark tones, but the best method for making a ceiling look taller depends on the room's size and shape, the wall color and how the room is furnished. For example, a single-color technique works best with small rooms, while cool color choices work best for large, open rooms. Before deciding on a method, consider whether you are willing to repaint the whole room or want to paint only the ceiling.
Instructions
1. Choose a shade of latex paint approximately two shades lighter than your wall color but in the same hue as the walls. Use this technique if the walls are painted a warm color such as red, orange, yellow, peach or gold. The lighter color will make the
2. Select a pale, cool color, such as a light sky-blue, lavender or light green, if your walls are painted in a cool color. Cool colors can make both walls and ceiling appear to recede, so if you are considering repainting the entire room, try a shade of green, blue or cool purple, with a bold shade on the walls and a lighter shade on the ceiling. Avoid purples with a lot of red for this purpose.
3. Select a single color of any shade to paint the entire room -- ceiling and walls -- for a small room, such as a bathroom or walk-in closet. The single continuous color can make the walls and ceiling blend, giving the ceiling a less noticeable appearance and making the room feel taller, especially when combined with low furniture such as backless benches and short-legged tables the same height as a coffee table.
4. Choose the cool-color method for a room with curved walls if you don't mind repainting the whole room. An odd-shaped room with angled, rather than curved, walls will benefit from a warm color scheme. Square or rectangular rooms benefit from any of the three methods listed.
