Choose Outdoor Light Fixtures For Your Home

Outdoor lighting can create a magical atmosphere.

Outdoor lighting can fill multiple roles as part of your landscaping, from setting a mood to deterring invasions. Once you evaluate your site and want to aim to achieve, you can visit a home improvement center to find low-voltage options in the electrical department. Take a sketch of your house, plot, walkways and focal points.

Instructions

1. Buy motion detector lights for one or more corners of your home to provide a sense of security. The light goes on every time someone or something passes in front of it. To decide how many motion detector lights to buy, walk around your yard after dark and to see which areas of your yard would benefit from light, typically the corner of the house nearest to the driveway or entryway. Motion detector lights light up a wide area of your yard. They will also provide lighting for you when you come home at night and have forgotten to leave a light on. Your arms may be full of packages but the light will come on for you the minute you pass in front of it.

2. Place path lights placed along pathways and walkways low to the ground to spread the light out over the walkway. This type of lighting helps prevent accidents and add ambiance as well. Place path lights in the backyard as well along pathways leading to outdoor living spaces or patios. Solar-powered path lights do not require special installation or utility use on your monthly power bill. Avoid a "runway look" by spacing path lights far apart.

3. Provide drama and ambiance after dark with backlights and uplights. A spotlight placed on the ground to shine up on an ornamental tree can dress up your home at night. Uplights can be added wherever you want to add a bit of drama. Backlights are small lights placed in the ground out of sight and used to throw light onto a plant and create interesting shadows. These lights are often placed near outdoor pools or garden ponds or to cast a shadow on a wall while lighting up the plant.

4. Add lights to your deck or patio, such as a hanging lantern or uplights. Or install outdoor floor lamps and table lamps. Some have heating elements in them to add warmth and extend your outdoor season.
