Keep your ceiling fan running smoothly and without noise.
Ceiling fans are supposed to provide air flow in your home and a cool breeze on hot summer days. Unfortunately, if your fan makes a lot of noise, it can be less than soothing. Several things can cause noise in ceiling fans. However, according to the Ceiling Fan Wizard, fans are typically noisy because of loose screws and unbalanced blades. Troubleshooting is necessary to get rid of annoying ceiling fan noise.
Instructions
Tighten Screws
1. Turn the fan off and wait until the blades are completely still.
2. Place a stepladder under the ceiling fan in an area that will give you easy access to the fan blades. Have a friend or family member spot you.
3. Inspect the screws that attach the fan blades to the actual fan. If the screws appear loose, insert a screwdriver--either Phillips or flathead, depending on the screw--into the screw heads and turn the screwdriver clockwise to tighten them.
4. Turn the fan on its highest setting and listen for noise. If the noise is gone, the issue is resolved.
Balance the Fan Blades
5. Measure from the tip of each fan blade to the ceiling, using the tape measure. For blades that are only slightly off, gently bend them upward toward the ceiling to even them out.
6. Turn the fan on its highest setting. If the noise is gone, the problem is solved. If noise remains, turn the fan off.
7. Attach the weighted clip from the fan balancing kit to one of the fan blades.
8. Turn the fan to listen for noise. If the sound remains, turn the fan off, remove the clip and attach it to the next fan blade.
9. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you find the fan blade that requires balancing. With the fan off, attach a stick-on weight from the kit to the top of the blade in the area the clip is positioned. Remove the clip and turn the fan on. If it is still noisy, add another stick-on weight.
