Basement Ceiling Types

Many great options are available for finishing basement ceilings.

When finishing a basement, the question of ceiling often comes up. Homeowners need to determine which type of ceiling works best for their house. There are several options when it comes to basement ceilings and certain things to consider when deciding which option is the right one.

Drop Ceilings and Suspended Ceilings

A drop ceiling, otherwise called a suspended ceiling, is one of the most popular ways of finishing off a basement ceiling. With a drop ceiling, a metal grid is installed on the ceiling and tiles are pushed into place. Tiles come in various sizes, shapes and colors. There are many benefits of having a drop ceiling. For one, tiles are easily taken out to get to plumbing pipes or electric wires. In the event of a plumbing or electrical problem, the ceiling is easily taken apart and easily put back together with no damage to the ceiling at all. Drop ceilings are also easier to install than some of the other options. One downfall of a drop ceiling is that they take up more vertical space than some of the other ceiling options.

Acoustic Ceiling Tiles

Acoustic ceiling tiles are considered the same as what is used in a drop ceiling. The difference is in the sound barrier. Acoustic tiles are used to reduce noise levels between the two floors. They provide a great barrier to reduce noise.

Drywall Ceilings

Drywall ceilings are also an option for a basement ceiling. Drywall creates a professional look and can be painted any color the homeowner chooses. Drywall also takes up less vertical space than some of the other options. Drywall is harder to install than a drop ceiling and, in the event of a plumbing or electrical problem, a hole in the drywall needs to be cut to get to the pipes or wires.

Fabric Ceilings

Many people opt for a fabric ceiling. With this option, a heavy duty fabric is purchased and stapled to the ceiling. Any type of fabric can be chosen and attached to the ceiling. The fabric helps create a bold look to accompany any type of theme. This is an inexpensive way to finish a basement ceiling.

Faux Wood Paneling

Many options of faux wood panels are offered for ceiling finishing. This wood is easily secured to the ceiling with screws and creates a comfortable ambience in a basement. Installation is fairly easy and many different colors and looks are available. In the event of a plumbing or electrical problem, it is relatively easy to unscrew the panels and remove them to get to the pipes or wires inside the ceiling.
