Mount Speakers In A Cathedral Ceiling

Home surround sound speakers can be mounted on brackets in a cathedral ceiling.

Satellite speakers for surround sound systems are a great addition to a room with cathedral or vaulted ceilings. Mounting them properly to the ceiling is imperative for the safety of your overhead speakers and for provision of adequate sound. There are several methods to mount the speakers, although the simplest method that will not require any cutting of your cathedral ceiling is to use pre-made mounting brackets with the correct weight-bearing capabilities for your speakers.

Instructions

1. Learn the weight of each speaker and find an appropriate mounting bracket or support system to attach the speaker to. One example of a ceiling mount is the Pinpoint AM 20 Wall and Ceiling Mount Speaker Bracket. For this mount, use the 100 millimeter arm that is included in the mounting set for cathedral ceiling placement.

2. Disassemble the bracket and secure the electrical cover plate to the unit, if necessary for your set up in a pre-wired house.

3. Climb a ladder to reach the speaker placement area of your ceiling. Find the stud on the ceiling with a stud finder or by knocking on the ceiling drywall with your knuckle to listen for the solid sound of a stud or beam. Mark with a pencil where the beam/stud is located. If no stud can be found, use a toggle or butterfly anchor appropriate for the weight of your speaker, which can be purchased from your local hardware store.

4. Loosen the hex screw of the bracket with a hex key wrench and remove the single point adapter. Attach your speaker to the adapter and insert the adapter back into the holder and tighten the hex screw.

5. Set the speaker and bracket in position on the marked stud of your ceiling and drill recommended screws or toggle anchors in the predrilled holes of the bracket. Slightly loosen the hex screw as needed to adjust and rotate the speaker to the desired position once it is mounted and then tighten the screw.
