Repair A Sagging Truss With A Cable

A sagging truss can cause multiple problems for your home's roof. When a truss sags, it causes your ceiling to bow downward. This bow is almost always visible, and it can crack drywall or other ceiling materials. You can repair a sagging truss with a cable in two to four hours, depending on the size and scope of the project.

Instructions

1. Attach eye bolts into the truss at the ceiling and at the roof where the roof decking and ceiling material attaches. Tighten the bolts with an adjustable wrench until the eyes are seated against the truss.

2. Attach a come-a-long to the eye bolts, and slowly crank it tight. Tighten the come-a-long slowly, raising the sag a few inches at a time.

3. Place temporary nails on opposite ends of the truss at the sag. Place nylon string tightly along the length of the truss at the sag.

4. Tighten the come-a-long so it is slightly above the nylon string by 1/4 inch. This will account for settling once the cable has been attached and the come-a-long has been released.

5. Drill a 1/2-inch hole into the truss at the roof and at the ceiling at the eye bolt locations. Place a 1/2-inch cable through the holes and wrap it around the truss. Clamp the cable around the truss using cable clamps.

6. Tighten the clamps with an adjustable wrench. Pull the cable as tight as possible before tightening the other end to ensure it remains tight after the pressure has been released.

7. Release the come-a-long slowly to place pressure on the cable. If the truss drops below the nylon string, retighten the come-a-long, adjust the cable and tighten the clamps. Remove the come-a-long completely from the eye bolts and remove the eye bolts.
