Troubleshoot Glacier Bay Toilets
Glacier Bay toilets are a line of fixtures sold through the home improvement retailer, Home Depot. Gravity toilets are traditionally popular models, especially in households. The Glacier Bay models that employ gravity flushing systems encounter problems similar to other brands, such as a poor flush and constant running. These problems can be remedied by simple troubleshooting to locate and adjust the specific culprit behind the issue.
Instructions
1. Turn the toilet's shut-off valve counter-clockwise to increase the water pressure, if you need to flush the Glacier Bay more than once to completely clear out the bowl. Locate the shut-off valve on the wall behind the left side of the toilet, about 6 inches above the floor. Drop a piece of toilet tissue into the bowl and flush the toilet. Observe whether the tissue is removed with one flush. If not, proceed to step 2.
2. Remove the tank lid and carefully place it on the floor behind the bowl, leaning against the wall. Flush the toilet and see if the flapper closes too quickly to allow a sufficient amount of water to flow from the tank to the bowl for a full flush. This is likely due to a chain from the flapper to the flush lever that is too long.
3. Adjust the flush lever hole that the chain is connected to, so that the chain length is shortened. Or, disconnect the chain from the lever and cut off excess chain links, using snips. Connect the chain to the lever. Cut the chain to a length that allows the flapper to close. Place a piece of toilet tissue in the bowl, flush the toilet, and if you observe that it does not execute a full flush, proceed to step 4.
4. Pull the stopper out of the tank's fill valve, located on the tank's left side. The stopper is located in the lower part of the fill valve body. Turn the fill valve counter-clockwise, using your hand, to adjust the fill valve's height.
5. Turn the fill valve clockwise, so that it locks into position. Reinsert the stopper.
6. Grip the vertical, threaded rod that is attached to the fill valve. Twist the rod clockwise to increase the tank's water level.
7. Observe how the flapper seats, if the toilet continues running long after it is flushed. Turn the shut-off valve completely clockwise. Flush the toilet, and hold down the handle so that as much water as possible drains from the tank.
8. Remove any debris or foreign material from the rim of the hole, that is blocking the flapper from seating fully. Wipe around the hole beneath the flapper with an emery cloth or sponge.
9. Remove the chain, if it is too short to allow the flapper to seat fully. Install a replacement chain, connected from the flapper to the flush lever, of the proper length.
10. Turn the shut-off valve counter-clockwise, and allow the tank to fill with water. Flush the tank and make certain that the flapper rises and then seats fully. Place the lid on the tank.
