Build A Hanging Ceiling Bed

Hanging beds depend on the strength of your ceiling.

Hanging beds are enjoyable and creative ideas for your sleeping arrangement, elevating you to a more comfortable level of sleep. While they seem complex, hanging beds are simple mechanisms that utilize very few resources and allow you to save space for minor storage under your bed. You can build a hanging bed to the height and sway of your choice.

Instructions

1. Saw lengths of 2-by-8-inch lumber to the size of the bed you want to build. For a twin bed, ensure that the frame measures at least 41 inches by 74 inches. Cut down two 2-by-2-inch lumber planks into slat supports that extend the inside length of the bed. Lastly, cut 2-by-4-inch lumber into at least 5 slats that measure the inside width. Trim down a 4-by-8-foot piece of plywood for the bottom of the bed.

2. Butt the first end rail against the inside of the side rail with wood glue and secure the joint with five 3-inch screws. Repeat on the other intersections.

3. Apply glue onto one surface of the slat supports and clamp them to the inside of the side rails of the bed frame, leaving at least 4 inches above. When the glue has set, place 3-inch countersunk screws through the slat supports, from the inside of the frame, so that the screws are not visible on the outside of the bed.

4. Lay the slats across the slat supports and nail them in place using 2-inch nails. Attach the plywood bottom to the slats using 1-inch nails.

5. Measure about 5 1/2 inches from the corner of each board and drill a 3/8-inch hole about 4 inches deep from the top of the frame. Using the shank of a screwdriver or other metal tool placed through the hole in each lag eye bolt for leverage, twist a 4 1/2-inch lag eye bolt into the holes. Repeat this on the ceiling joists with one lag eye bolt in each corner of the bed frame, making the holes slightly outside of the bed frame dimensions to avoid sway.

6. Link one quick chain link to each end of four 9-foot long lengths of chain and one to each lag eye bolt in the ceiling.

7. Run the chain through the holes in the lag eye bolts on each frame corner and connect the two ends to the quick link on the ceiling, ensuring that the bed is even and hangs at the proper height.
