Clean And Remove Mildew From Popcorn Ceilings

Mildew grows on a variety of surfaces.

Mildew is a common problem on ceilings located in rooms with a high level of humidity or excess moisture. When you find mildew growing on your popcorn ceiling, remove it as soon as possible to prevent permanent staining and damaging. However, the texture of popcorn ceilings makes cleaning and removing the mildew difficult, but not impossible. When cleaning popcorn ceilings, you must take care not to damage the texture.

Instructions

1. Secure the upholstery attachment to your vacuum hose. Remove any cobwebs from the popcorn ceiling with the attachment. Do not sweep the attachment across the ceiling. Instead, place the attachment over the cobwebs and suck them up.

2. Fill a bucket with 1 gallon cool water and add 1 cup oxygen bleach. Mix the contents together with a long-handled spoon. Fill a clean spray bottle with the mixture.

3. Cover the flooring underneath the ceiling affected with the mildew with a plastic tarp. Wear a pair of rubber gloves and safety goggles.

4. Spray the mildew thoroughly with the mixture until saturated. Let the mixture sit on the popcorn ceiling for 10 to 15 minutes. Saturate a lint-free cloth in the mixture.

5. Blot the mildew off the ceiling with the lint-free cloth. Continue misting the mildew with the mixture and blotting the ceiling until you have removed the mildew. Pat the ceiling dry with a lint-free towel.
