Cheap Ceiling Ideas

Suspended lighting

The ceiling design can be as important as the rest of the room. The design you choose for the ceiling will depend on the room. Cheap ceiling ideas range from using wood frames, fake wood beams to create a open beam appearance, recessed lighting, using suspended objects with lights to create mood lighting, painted designs or fabric draped from corner to corner. Cheap ceiling ideas are as limited as the imagination.

Game Rooms

Attach old board games to the ceiling to decorate a game room. Cards and poker chips make a great decoration when formed in a circle around a ceiling fan. Depending on the use of the game room, you can find old and discarded pool cues, pool balls, ping-pong paddles, tennis rackets or any other items based on your favorite game and on the theme that you are considering for your game room. Shop the thrift stores and bargain bins--most items sell for a few cents.

Celebrations

Paintings on a ceiling

Decorating your room and ceiling for weddings, birthday parties, holidays or graduations, for instance, may be as simple as placing streamers stretched across the room. For example, to celebrate a wedding reuse Christmas lights intertwined with white crepe streamers, starting at the center and extending to each corner of the room for the length of the lights. Tape small lacy paper doilies in a pattern near the center of the streamers or hang them from a string at the ends.

General Ideas

Open-beam, lowered or drop-down, copper-tiled, framed and coffered ceilings each make an attractive addition to a kitchen, dining or living room. Drop-down ceilings are easily created by creating shapes from heavy cardboard or inexpensive wood sheets, suspending them from the ceiling with small-link chain or cord. For mood lighting, use a string of lights attached between the ceiling and the board, hiding the cord along the ceiling and corner to the outlet with a cardboard strip painted to match the wall. Coffered ceilings are easily created with old picture frames or wood beams, cut and attached to the ceiling to make squares. Before attaching the beams to the ceiling, paint them a light shade, lightly sand and finish them with a satin stain of a medium to dark color.
